Advancing disability rights and leadership globally®

A group of ten or so young people in front of a castle on a clear day smile and wave energetically at camera. Many are people of color and one person uses a power wheelchair while others stand.
Welcome to the U.S. People with Disabilities Education Abroad Pathway! If you are an individual with a disability based in the United States and looking to have the education abroad experience of a lifetime, you are in the right spot.

How to Navigate the Pathway

Many of the resources have a lot going on, but you can stick to the pathway by taking the following steps.

  • Simply look for these light green tiles at the bottom of an article to move backward or forward through the pathway. You can navigate to the tiles with your screen reader by finding the previous or next region/landmark.
  • As you advance through the modules, click on the “test your knowledge” links to take short quizzes and receive updates on your progress. These links look like black buttons with white text.
  • Within the steps of the pathway you will notice lists of links under “Related Resources” and “Related Links,” which respectively lead to related articles on our website, and related articles on other people’s websites. You are welcome to click through these, but please note that many of the resources are not part of the pathway.
  • The quizzes are done with Google Forms for accessibility reasons. While it will message you that you need to be signed in to save your progress, you do not need to have a Google account to take the quizzes.

Throughout this pathway, you will cover the following resources.

Personal Education Abroad Plan

While you are reviewing the pathway, think about the questions in the Personal Education Abroad Plan worksheet, downloadable as a Word file. For greater ease of use, you may also put together your plan in the Personal Education Abroad Plan Google Form. Want to keep your reflections private? No problem. Just select “No” when it asks if you want to share your response, and we will not keep your submission. You can skip the reflections on the quizzes if you take this approach.

If you have a question about education abroad at any point in the process feel free to drop us a line.

This article is part of the U.S. People with Disabilities Education Abroad Pathway. The next several articles are mostly about encouraging you to think about education abroad as an option. Some of them may not speak as much to your experience, so feel free to skip as you like. Be aware that the next resource: “The Advice Is Simple”, is the opening to a release of our flagship AWAY Journal. You are welcome to explore the other articles in the AWAY Journal, but to continue along the pathway, stick with the green tiles.

The U.S. People with Disabilities Education Abroad Pathway is a resource of the National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange (NCDE). NCDE is a project of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, designed to increase the participation of people with disabilities in international exchange between the United States and other countries, and is supported in its implementation by Mobility International USA.
