Advancing disability rights and leadership globally®

It will take a global effort to ensure that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) include people with disabilities as both leaders and beneficiaries.

On December 3, 2017, Mobility International USA observes International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) by recognizing disabled leaders and allies who are moving this agenda forward through policy and legislation. In partnership with powerful disabled people’s organizations (DPOs) and allies around the world, MIUSA’s efforts are strengthening both the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and national disability rights laws.

Here are a few highlights from around the globe worth celebrating:

Peru

Using both international and national instruments to advocate for their rights, disability activists and allies conducted cross-disability trainings and Action Plans, linking the CRPD and SDGs to Peru’s General Law on Disability.

Armenia

Led by a disabled women’s organization, activists are participating in MIUSA-led trainings to work strategically on passing a new disability rights law.

Mexico

Efforts are underway to strengthen cross-disability coalitions of DPOs to increase access to justice and advance disability rights.

Sri Lanka

The first-ever WILD Regional program to take place in Sri Lanka, will build and strengthen the pipeline of disabled women activists from Sri Lanka, China, Nepal, and India.

Pakistan

Pakistani DPOs from throughout the country have come together for MIUSA’s law and advocacy trainings. They are unified in their effort to pass the country’s first national disability rights law.

Stateside, MIUSA is also spearheading its membership initiative, which will bring U.S.-based NGOs to join the movement to create a more just world for disabled youth and adults globally. We are calling upon DPOs, international development organizations, and governments to work together to demand and accelerate inclusion in the many sectors of development: education, transportation, health, recreation, leadership, and more.

Change agents of the world – including our 2300 MIUSA alumni from over 135 countries: we celebrate YOU! Our hearts and minds are filled with a renewed sense of dedication and passion to create a world as it should be, where each individual is respected and celebrated.

We have a long way to go, but there is no stopping us now!

Join us, and take action!
