“Internationalization is the conscious effort to integrate and infuse international, intercultural, and global dimensions into the philosophy of postsecondary education. Successful internationalization efforts involve active and responsible engagement of the academic community in partnerships and global networks.” – NAFSA
Whether talking about a film festival, faculty research, guidance for creating study abroad programs, language learning, or culturally sensitive orientations, it is important to make sure that students, faculty and staff with disabilities have access to these growing campus internationalization efforts.
With the goal of increasing access to international exchange for people with disabilities, it’s essential that people with disabilities be included in all opportunities and activities related to campus internationalization.
Goals:
During this initiative, the NCDE will interview disabled faculty and staff at higher education institutions to learn more about their experience being involved with internationalization efforts on their campus and to share their insights on how disability can be more represented across their campus.
The NCDE will also reach out to leading international exchange associations to assess the extent higher education institutions are implementing internationalization strategies and initiatives that benefit the international exchange of people with disabilities.
After collecting stories, interviews, and practices, the NCDE will chronicle existing successes and share additional strategies for further diversifying internationalization efforts to include disability.
Share your experience:
The NCDE seeks to learn more about the following:
- Faculty/Staff with disabilities: How are faculty with disabilities supported to conduct international research or to create faculty led study abroad programs?
- Curriculum: How are students with sensory and learning disabilities supported to learn languages?
- Curriculum: How does the orientation curriculum for outbound and inbound exchange students cover disability topics?
- Access and Inclusion: How are campus events related to globalization made accessible to attendees with disabilities?
