Advancing disability rights and leadership globally®

An International Day of Persons with Disabilities message from Susan Sygall, CEO of MIUSA

With a mission to advance leadership and disability rights globally, every day at MIUSA is International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Working with more than 2300 alumni from over 135 countries, we put our trust and hopes in the thousands of disabled activists and allies we have been privileged to work with over the past 38 years.

We celebrate the disabled women activists from over 84 countries who have participated in our Women's Institute on Leadership and Disability (WILD) programs and the leadership they have demonstrated in revolutionizing the status of disabled women and  girls globally.

We respectfully acknowledge our partners in Armenia, Vietnam, Peru, Guatamala, Mexico and Kenya for working collaboratively with MIUSA to strengthen the laws and policies in their countries so that disabled citizens can finally achieve the rights they deserve as leaders and citizens.

We appreciate our collaborative efforts with disabled people's organizations in Pakistan and cherish the friendships formed and the work we have achieved together this year, promoting justice and equality as well as intercultural understanding.

We salute the disabled international exchange students who participated in MIUSA's leadership workshops just prior to embarking on a year of attending high schools across the United States.

We laud the thousands of people with disabilities who reached out to our staff working on the National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange project, seeking opportunities to become citizen diplomats as Fulbright scholars, Peace Corps volunteers, ESL teachers, study abroad students, and more, traveling between the United States and other countries.

We thank the member organizations of our Excellence in Development and Disability Inclusion (EDDI) initiative who are taking the lead to ensure that global efforts to promote peace and dignity are accessible to all.

And finally, we applaud our global family of disabled people and allies – homestay families, funders, allies, activists, supporters, donors and alumni – who are working tirelessly to create a "world as it should be."

Thank you for celebrating International Day of Persons with Disabilities with us and for donating to MIUSA so that together we can continue to do this life-changing work that is still so needed in the world today.

Thanks to each and every one of you for all you do and for the honor of working with you. Onward, upward!
